The "Guides to Biblical Scholarship" series aims to provide a popular presentation of major issues and developments in recent biblical scholarship. Here, Via (emeritus, Duke Divinity Sch.; The Ethics of Mark's Gospel) has written an updated version of a book of the same name by Hendrickus Boers that appeared in the series in 1979. Via examines major advances since then in the debate concerning the nature and structure of New Testament theology, especially regarding historical criticism, literary criticism, and existential interpretation. An introductory chapter discusses the contribution made by Boers's book, and Chapters 2 through 7 follow the same basic structure: Via presents a succinct overview of a significant issue (e.g., the objectivity of historical criticism, historical vs. hermeneutical structure, postmodernist interpretations) followed by a usually very brief but thorough overview of a dizzying array of contemporary scholars' contributions. At the end of each chapter, he summarizes the main issues and offers his evaluation. While constituting impressive scholarship, this book assumes too much of a general reader. I'm learning Portuguese in order to converse with my boyfriend and (more importantly) his Portuguese-only speaking mother. This book is an excellent and fun resource for language learning! The exercises are easy, engaging, and clear, and teach basic Portuguese grammar in a logical way. It also includes flashcards and sticky labels, so that you can label various items around your house with the appropriate Portuguese word (and correct pronunciation) I bought this to supplement my learning with Pimsleur and wish that I had bought it much, much sooner. If you're in doubt, definitely purchase this book!! You won't regret it.

This workbook really brings me back to the days of my childhood where I could just sit and learn by doing activities, practicing vocabulary, and putting together sentences. this workbook really simplifies learning basic Portuguese (including, but not limited to, Brazilian Portuguese) and makes it fun. The software included is also great for brushing up on more common words, phrases, and numbers; the software lessons are short and include a mix of audio and visual matching activities. While this workbook is by no means perfect, it has been my favorite source for learning the basics of Portuguese and keeps me engaged.

This book has some good basic vocabulary that could be useful for traveling. It also includes some conjugation. I would like to see more conjugation. I gave it 3 stars because the pronunciation is a mix between Portuguese from Portugal and Portuguese from Brasil. I saw the picture on the front cover (Christ statue in Brasil), and assumed they would teach the Brasilian accent. Maybe it is an accent used in one of the towns of Brasil, I'm not sure.

The best book for someone who doesn't have any knowledge of the Portuguese language.
