Among the six diseases considered by the World Health Organization to have the greatest impact on human health, five are parasitic and all five are vector borne. Despite great advances in knowledge of these diseases, control remains elusive. Large numbers of other parasitic agents threaten human and companion animal health as well. Parasitic agents are generally considered to be protists, worms, and arthropods. These organisms are of great importance to human and animal health. This book provides basic information on the biologies of these kinds of agents, but emphasizes how control programs can be structured in a sociological, political, and economic milieu.
Unique to Parasitology and Vector Biology is an emphasis on the control of parasitic and vector borne diseases that impinge on human welfare. This text is not encyclopedic; key examples are taken from a variety of hosts including mankind, companion animals, food animals, and certain species of wildlife. This book places parasitology in a "real world context" in modern college courses, following the new emphasis in colleges today.

About the Author
William C. Marquardt is Emeritus Professor of Zoology at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, where he has been affiliated since 1966. Professor Marquardt received his Ph.d. from the University of Illinois, Urbana in 1954. He was a member of the Center of Zoonoses Research at the Unversity of Illinois from 1962-66 and Associate Director of the Arthropod-Borne and Infectious Diseases Laboratory at Colorado State University from 1987 to 1995. His publications include approximately 75 refereed papers in periodicals, four books, as well as book reviews and chapters.

Richard S. Demaree received his Ph.D. from Colorado State University in 1969. Since 1972, he has been Professor of Zoology as well as Coordinator of the Electron Microscopy Programs at California State University, Chico. His publications include two books and approximately 40 refereed papers in academic journals.

Robert Grieve received his Ph.D. from the University of Florida in 1978. From 1987-96 he was Professor of Parasitology at the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Colorado State University, Fort Collins. Since 1993, he has been Director of Research at Heska Corporation, Fort Collins, Colorado. His publications include one book, several book chapters, and approximately 80 refereed papers in academic journals.

About the Author

Linda Mui started working for O'Reilly & Associates in 1986. She was first hired as a production assistant, later became an apprentice system administrator, and now is a writer. Her first writing job was for termcap and terminfo, which she co-authored with John Strang and Tim O'Reilly. She also wrote Pick BASIC, on programming applications for Pick systems. In between writing jobs, Linda works on troff macros and tools for the O'Reilly & Associates production staff. Linda was raised in the Bronx, New York and now lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Lately she has been trying to improve herself by learning how to swim, play billiards, and accessorize.

Tim O'Reilly is the founder and CEO of O'Reilly & Associates, thought by many to be the best computer book publisher in the world. O'Reilly also publishes online through the O'Reilly Network (www.oreillynet.com) and hosts conferences on technology topics. Tim is an activist for open source and open standards, and an opponent of software patents and other incursions of new intellectual property laws into the public domain. Before buying this book, I bought "Automotive Diagnostic Systems: Understanding OBD I & OBD II," which is the other book that will probably show up if you are searching for books on this subject. In my opinion, this book (Haynes) is infinitely better. There is simply no comparison. In fact, I wish I hadn't wasted my money on the other book now that I have received the Haynes book. I have posted a review of the other book on Amazon.Now this book is more like it! While the other book was mostly theory and spent far too much time on the history of OBD, the regulatory aspects of it, etc., and was filled with meaningless charts and graphs and loaded with errors while not even showing a single picture of an actual sensor or an under-the-hood" picture, this book (Haynes) is what someone who works on cars really needs. It is loaded with pictures of the actual sensors, showing what they look like, where they should be located, how to diagnose them with tools besides just a code scanner (digital volt meters, vacuum gauges, vacuum tools, stethoscopes, etc.) This book is for people who don't want to just read a code but who want to get their hands dirty and fix the problem. The other book hardly mentions a word about fixing problems and it doesn't have a single picture of a sensor, where it should be located, etc. Instead, it just rambles on and on about theory to the point that one might get a headache. The Haynes book is a seat-of-your pants book that tells you exactly how to diagnose and fix problems. It's also much larger and covers a lot more information. In addition, it has an excellent glossary and index, unlike the other book. In short, the other book covers basically the history of OBD, theory, and so on while the Haynes book is far more practical. People who have worked on cars for many years like myself will get a kick out of how the Haynes book makes it clear that tools like vacuum gauges are still very useful while the other book casually mentions then in one sentence as if they are some kind of historical oddity. I was happy to see that I have almost every tool them mention in the Haynes book too. So don't throw away your vacuum gauge and other tools as the other book might suggest.I'm surprised at some of the negative reviews here for this book while the other book has better ratings, although far fewer reviews. Don't let that fool you. Get the other book if you want to have your eyes glaze over on meaningless 3D graphs that often have nothing to do with the accompanying text and seem to have been just thrown in to fill up space and you don't mind numerous errors in the text (my book is all marked up with corrections). On the other hand, if you want the background information AND hands-on instructions on how to actually diagnose and fix problems, this is the book for you. The differences in the book could be summarized by saying that the other book talks about OBD theory while this book shows you how to actually use a scan tool and fix problems you may encounter.Nothing is perfect, however. The only faults I find with the Haynes book is that it's printed on cheaper paper - about a grade above newspaper grade - and the pictures are in black & white. But it has infinitely more practical information. In fact, when I finished the other book, I had learned a couple things but I knew nothing more about actually fixing problems. If you don't want to just read about theory but instead want to see what the senors look like, where they are located, how to diagnose problems, what tools you will need to fix them, etc., this is definitely the book for you.I highly recommend this book. I just wish I had bought it before buying the other book.

hard to understand some of the explanation of codes but it could be because of my lack of experience with the more complex parts of cars. I have to say though I spent money on this and the newest unit they had and it saved me THOUSANDS in the long run. My car did not pass smog so I took it to a shop who said I need this and that and the other and would cost nearly 3,000.00 to fix or he would buy my car for the same price. I love my car so I took his little list and began to buy the first part and had my son fix the car The air flow filter at $140.00. Then I bought the machine. After many calls to the maker of the machine and buying their subscription I pulled up a couple of codes but could not understand what was said on the machine read-out. so I bought this book, which said replace gas cap. I did. car passed smog. Lying frigging smog repair shop. Wish I had bought before I replaced the filter, when my son took off the old one he said it looks just like the new one; took the old one to the part store and they said this didn't need to be replaced. Oh well lesson learned. Nothing bothers me more than people who do evil just because they can.

This product was just received a few days ago. As I begin to read through it's pages, I'm impressed by the amount of information, both regarding OBDII, trouble shooting test equipment and how to use the mentioned test equipment. When you first order/receive this book, you think that it's going be all about OBDII scanner codes. Instead you find a rather complete information set regarding various test equipment and how to apply this gear to what's happening underhood. There's so much information regarding general test equipment and engine repair that I have to keep looking at the cover to see that indeed the book is about OBDII code scanners.Stating the obvious, today's automobile engines are far more technical than what us old guys worked on in the 50's and 60's. All this technology required abandoning the personal satisfaction of fixing one's vehicle troubles. This book helps bring an old shadetree mechanic up to speed with today's engine technology and between this book and an OBDII scanner, I once again can get back under the hood.After more time with this book, I'll post more impressions. I gave it four stars but only because I need more time with this book. In the interim, I can write that the amount of information in the few pages I've read, the book is well worth having. I might add that this book, without a doubt, makes for a fine inexpensive gift to give to a loved one who likes to do their own vehicle repairs.-----------------------------------------------First addendum: I've now had time to spend a couple of sessions perusing the first five chapters of this book. The book is a veritable wealth of basic automotive information for both the novice and the more experienced.Chapter one and two are intro and warranty chapters.Chapter three is a nice primer on basic diagnostic tools and their use.Chapter four is a troubleshooting chapter which deals with a wide range of information on basic vehicle systems. This chapter starts with basic system checks and moves onto battery starting/charging, spark plugs, EGR/EVAP systems, to testing of vacuum systems, to troubleshooting. Wow!Chapter five deals with Powertrain management: fuel injection systems, fuel pumps, the "Powertrain Control Module" (PCM) and has a plethora of information regarding various sensors the OBDII system is dependent upon. Double wow! It's not until chapter six that the book finally starts to write about OBDII monitors. Lastly, all chapters come with lots and lots of annotated B&W photos to help the reader visualize what's being written about.More to follow, as I've had more time with the pages of this book.
